Motivation to Make a Change

Get clear on what you want and why you want it to motivate yourself towards taking action. Knowing ‘your why’ works as a great motivator, because it gives you a reason to get things done. In addition, putting things onto paper will subconsciously trigger your brain to focus on these specific things, which will lead to more direct actions related to your goals.

Step 1: Find out what is most important to you.

Your values represent what’s important to you. Becoming aware of them will help you shift your focus to taking action, and that will help you get closer to achieving your goals.

Your values are similar to your needs (mentioned in Reprogram your Habits) but they are a bit more flexible because they are not things you absolutely cannot live without. They are, instead, more representative of what is most important to you. The things you value most in life.

Write down five values that you feel connected to. If you want, write a small description in your own words what each value means to you personally.

What do you value the most:

Accomplishments, Adventure, Challenge, Connection, Creativity, Discipline,

Diversity, Efficiency, Environment, Family, Freedom, Health, Honesty, Humor, Loyalty, Openness, Personal growth, Privacy, Responsibility, Romance, Security, Spirituality, Structure.

Step 2: Set your goals.

When determining your goals try to relate them to your values. These are the things that are important to you. Also review your needs, challenges, and habits (mentioned in Reprogram your Habits) to help you figure out what you want to achieve in your life. This can be both short-term and long-term goals.

For example, if one of your values is ‘adventure’, you might want to travel more or go to a place you’ve never been to before. Or when you care about the environment, you might set a goal to live more self-sufficient/use less water/buy less stuff/sign up for solar power. If health is important to you, you might want to exercise on a regular basis and eat more vegetables.

Write down five goals that are related to your values.

Step 3: Discover the impact of your actions.

Becoming aware of what is important to you and setting goals is just the first step in a long journey.

To really make a difference you need to take consistent action (by developing effective habits) and remind yourself daily WHY you need to take action. One of the ways to motivate yourself is to think about the impact of your actions by looking at your emotions. Turning negative emotions into something positive changes your mindset and your perspective on a situation.

Write down how you would feel if you don’t make a change.

Now imagine that you already achieved your goals. How would you feel if you do make a change? Write it down.

Step 4: Discover your why.

In this final step, you need to visualize your life as if you already achieved your goals. What does your life look like? Think about where you are waking up, how you are spending your day, in what kind of environment you are, who are the people you are with? And most importantly, how are you feeling? Create a picture in your mind as clearly as possible. This is your ‘why’. Whenever you feel unmotivated, this is what you need to remind yourself of. If you’re taking consistent action now, this will wait for you in the future.

Write down your personal reasons for taking action.

Find out how taking small consistent steps can help you to reach your goals.
