How to Develop Effective Habits

Updated: Feb 14, 2020

Start taking small consistent steps towards achieving your goals.

It all starts with developing effective habits. Why? Because when actions become habits, you will start doing routine actions without thinking about it. It has become a habit. Developing new habits might take some effort and time, but it’s well worth the results. In this post, you will explore the skills you can improve and small actions you can take to get closer to your goals and feel happier and more fulfilled in your life.

1. Develop your perfect morning routine

How you start your morning is how you spend your day, and how you spend your days is how you live your life. Start thinking about what activities you can do every morning to start the day fresh and energetic. And imagine how this will affect the rest of your day.

TASK: Imagine what your perfect morning would look like. How would you start your day? Think about what gives you energy and what motivates you to get out of bed. Do that first thing in the morning! Create a step by step list of your morning routine that will help you to get energized, motivated and ready to start the day.

2. Plan daily routine actions

Habits don’t become habits in a day. It takes some determination to make something a routine action. Think of skills you want to improve that should become a routine action; steps that you should take continuously on a daily or weekly basis. Or make a list of repeatable actions that will bring you closer to your goals. After a while, you will do it automatically because it has become part of your routine.

TASK: Create a list of habits, daily routine actions, and steps that you need to do consistently. Then start simple. Pick one habit, one vehicle that will bring you closer to your goals and future desires, and do it daily for the next thirty days.

3. Track your habits

TASK: Keep a log of your habits to see your progress. If progress is not occurring, don’t give up hope. Think about why you haven’t practiced your skills or did the things you set out to do every day. Keep in mind the reason you want to develop this habit. Do you need daily reminders? Set them up! Will it motivate you to have a reward at the end? Treat yourself when you hit a milestone!

Answer these questions when you’re having trouble keeping on track with your habits. Remind yourself why you set them up in the first place.

🗸 How can you make it more enjoyable?

🗸 What would it mean to you?

🗸 Where would it lead you?

🗸 What would you achieve?

🗸 How would it make you feel if you did it?
